A Best Made Reading: The Cremation of Sam McGee by Johnny Cash
And a view of Lake Labarge circa 1900 with a man and his horse-drawn sled and dog team (photograph by H.C. Barley). Robert Service wrote The Cremation of Sam McGee in 1907 which takes place “on the marge of Lake Labarge”. Harrie C. Barley was hired in 1898 by the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway to document the construction and early operations of their narrow gauge railway linking Skagway, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon. If you have a favorite reading of Sam McGee or images of the Yukon don’t hesitate to send them to us as we’d love to post it all up here in the coming weeks.
