My Thoughts on Squarespace.com

General Thoughts

Just like any solution squarespace.com is not perfect for every project, but it can be very powerful. Squarespace offers a powerful back end that rivals many of today’s popular content management systems. But you have to pay for it. To get access to all the power and functionality squarespace offers you have to purchase the $50 a month package. This can be reduced if you know a coupon code. These are easily found one podcasts which squarespace is a sponsor (twit, revision3). When you think about it, with the ease of use, power of the system, and reliable hosting that really isn’t a bad deal. Also not every site needs the full squarespace arsenal, so a less expensive plan can be used as we have done with the Real Life Community site.

Designing

As a designer I actually found working with squarespace to be a pleasure. I didn’t have to worry about back end functionality, I could just design. I used the built in css editor that gives you a series of fields and sliders to adjust the design of the site. When I needed to write a little custom css it was a breeze to add what I needed. There is a great UI for the back end, it does take a little getting used to but there is a set of video tutorials to help. For those of you that may feel limited by using the WYSIWYG back end you can write a full custom css and even inject code to add functionality if squarespace doesn’t already have it. Overall I really like the system and recommend it. There are less expensive solutions but the may not be as easy and as elegant.
